NOTES:

“Vetoes”: The Whigs are upset by the separation of powers, and annoyed that the President doesn’t merely rubber stamp congressional legislation.

A “demagogue” is a political leader who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.

Tyler is President John Tyler.

John Brough (whose name does, in fact, rhyme with ‘enough’) , was the publisher of the Ohio Eagle and the The Cincinnati Enquirer, both Democratic-leaning newspapers.  He served in a variety of state-level political offices. In 1844 he was the Ohio state auditor.

“Locofoco” is a disparaging name for the Democrats.
